"Because Giordano's father wanted him to acquire the ability to work at great speed, he always stood at his side, never letting him out of his sight, and saying to him every so often, "Luca, do it quick." Tims . .. [he] was called "Luca fa presto." "- Francesco Saverio Baldinucci, c. 1705
Giordano was prominent during the final flowering of the BAROQUE period. He was from Naples, where he came under the influence of the Spanish artist RIBERA (Spain controlled Naples at that time). Later he studied under CORTONA, but he loved Venetian coloring and the open brushwork of TITIAN, TINTORETTO, and VERONESE. He traveled often, and was even called to work at the Spanish court. Although he was legendary for his speed and virtuosity, as the passage quoted above describes, his style varied. He combined the High Baroque and Baroque Classicism in a light, airy, decorative manner that presages the Rococo.
